If Backslider was my deconstruction project, this is my reconstruction project. While my previous albums were predominantly modern pop R&B with a hint of ‘00s contemporary gospel, this album is the inverse. Deeply inspired by liberation theology, I wanted to pay homage to the sounds and messages that shaped me most and produce an album that truly reflects the music I grew up on. Yet, I worked painstakingly to compose lyrics that would be as accessible, non-dogmatic, and inclusive as possible for people who aren’t religious or spiritual—with a side of social politics for good measure.
